Cold plunging at White Pond - would you do it?

On a frigid winter morning at White Pond, the water is still and the air carries the sharp bite of March cold. For many people, the idea of stepping into that icy water would be unthinkable. But for some local Concord residents, the ritual has become a daily source of renewal.

“I do it because it makes me feel better every single time, no matter what,” said one interipid plunger. Another swimmer’s journey into cold water didn’t begin with an extreme plunge or a New Year’s resolution. Instead, it started with a moment of inspiration during a snowstorm.

“I was inspired to try cold water swimming by seeing a neighbor swim past one beautiful winter morning during a snow storm.”    Curious, they began researching the benefits of cold water immersion and realized there was a simple way to start safely: don’t stop swimming when the weather turns cold.

“I learned the easiest and safest way for me to start was to just continue swimming every day instead of giving it up as the weather grew colder, as was my habit.”

The effects were almost immediate. Beyond the thrill of the cold, the swimmer noticed significant physical and emotional benefits.

“I felt the benefits immediately—pain relief, greater mobility, energy, positive mood, relaxation, and just a general increase in feelings of equanimity.”

Cold plunging has grown in popularity in recent years, but for many who practice it regularly, the appeal is simple. It’s not about endurance or pushing limits—it’s about how it feels afterward: clear, calm, and invigorated.

And on the shores of White Pond, even in winter, the water continues to offer that quiet reward to those willing to step in.
